Slot Machines a Short History

In 1894, Charles Fey, began manufacturing slot machines from his small workshop in San Francisco. Mr. Fey developed many new process of coin operated gambling machines or Slot Machines. He invented the original three reel Slot Machine in 1898.

In 1907, Mr. Fey joined with the Mills Novelty Company, together they then constructed the Mills Liberty Bell Slot Machine that was based on Mr. Fey's three reel slot machine design. The Liberty Bell Slot Machine was built with a cast iron case and a replica Liberty Bell was cast on to the front of the slot machine. The first Liberty Bell Slot Machines all originally had cast iron feet with toes. In later models the toes were abolished and replaced with ornately cast scrolled feet.

The Liberty Bell Slot Machine's reel strips depicted the standard playing card imagery that everyone was used to at the time - Diamonds, Spades, Hearts, Clubs, Bells, Stars and Horseshoes. No Cherries, Lemons or other fruit were to be found, at that time. The fruit would not appear until the 1940's when gambling was declared illegal in most states. After the change in the gambling law, the Slot Machines were set to award jackpot winners with different flavored gum instead of cash money. The flavor of the gum was determined by the type of fruit on the winning line.

One of the original Liberty Bell Slot Machines can still be seen today in the antique Slot Machine collection at the Liberty Belle Saloon in Reno, Nevada.

The 1940's saw Bugsy Siegel, a famous American Gangster, added slot machines to his Flamingo Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Slot Machines were originally located around the casino in strategic areas to entertain the wives and girlfriends of the male high rolling gamblers. Soon profits from the slot machines began to out pace that of the casino table games. The 1980's saw the popularity of slot machines and casino table games at about the same level, but by the 1990's slot machines had taken the profit lead over the casino table games. In the 21st century Slot Machines account for over eighty percent of casino revenue in the United States.

Original slot machines were mechanical devices of gears, wheels and reels. Cheaters and con-men tried various ways to beat the slot machines, they tried everything from the use of magnets to drilling a holes through the casing of the slot machine in an attempts to influence the reel mechanism. Slot Machine Designers have kept modifying and refining the slot machines to keep the cheaters at bay.

In the 21st century almost all slot machines are electronic and controlled by computer micro chips so that cheaters attempting manipulation of the machines is now almost a part of slot machine history.
